Overhaul Q&A #1

We have answered a selection of questions submitted through the Overhaul Q&A.

We plan to continue sharing answers to additional questions in future updates.

*Please note that the schedule and contents are subject to change without notice.

■About the Overhaul Direction & Schedule

Q:When do you plan to provide more details about the gameplay changes, and what systems will you be covering in those future updates?

A:First, throughout September, we plan to continue engaging with the community by answering questions through the ongoing Q&A.

Then, starting in October, we will gradually share more details through our official social media. This will include details on the battle rules after the overhaul, the gameplay elements that will change alongside them, as well as other features such as the Season Pass and other long-term progression systems.

After we have had the opportunity to address the community's main questions, we plan to begin showcasing new visuals, MAX Super Attacks, and more before the month leading up to the overhaul.

Q:If a large number of players react negatively to the overhaul, would the team consider reverting these changes?

A:We do not have plans to cancel or reverse the overhaul.

We understand that this decision has come as a surprise and may have caused confusion for many players. As we explained during the livestream and in our Developer Letter, we concluded that it would be difficult to maintain a healthy player population if the game continued in its current form. This overhaul was therefore a decision made to address those challenges.

We recognize that this is a major undertaking and a significant challenge for our team as well. After careful consideration of the circumstances that led us here, we believe this is the right path forward for the long-term future of the game.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and continued support.

Q:When is the overhaul planned to be released?

A:The overhaul is currently scheduled for the end of the year, but we are not ready to announce a specific date just yet. Please stay tuned a little longer for further updates.

Q:How do you plan to satisfy both existing players and those who are new to the game? Do you believe this overhaul will solve the game's biggest issues?

A:We are doing everything we can to ensure that both our current players and new players can enjoy the game.

At the same time, we believe that the only way to know whether this overhaul successfully addresses these challenges is to see how players respond once it is released.

That said, one of the major challenges we faced was the difficulty of maintaining a healthy player population under the current structure. In order to keep the service running for the long term, we concluded that the game needed to evolve into a title that could be enjoyed by a broader audience, which is why we made the decision to pursue this overhaul.

At the core of that effort is our commitment to preserving what makes this game unique: the combination of Dragon Ball and team-based battles. While staying true to that identity, we are aiming to create a more intuitive and accessible gameplay experience. At the same time, we are not looking to remove strategic depth entirely. We want to retain the fun of teamwork and meaningful decision-making while ensuring the game does not become overly complex.

■About Game Rules & Victory Conditions

Q:Will the current version of GEKISHIN's battle rules still be playable after Season 8, or will they be completely replaced by the new rules?

A:The current GEKISHIN ruleset will be completely replaced by the new ruleset.

As the shift to a new camera perspective requires us to rebalance and rework many aspects of the game, and as it is important to maintain a healthy player population under the new ruleset, we hope you understand that it would be difficult to offer both the current GEKISHIN ruleset and the new ruleset simultaneously.

Q:Under the new rules, players will need to collect all 7 Dragon Balls. If one team manages to secure 4 Dragon Balls early and then stays grouped near their base to protect their lead, what comeback mechanics are in place for the opposing team?

A:We believe it is important for matches to have opportunities for comebacks.

Since the win condition has been simplified to the number of Dragon Balls a team possesses, we are adjusting core gameplay balance elements such as Hero HP, Super Attack damage, and healing options to encourage more frequent battles and respawns.

In addition, Dragon Balls can be stolen by defeating the Hero carrying them. We want to ensure that even in the final moments of a match, teams still have opportunities to reclaim Dragon Balls and turn the game around.

At the same time, we are being cautious about introducing overly powerful comeback mechanics. If comeback elements become too influential, they could create situations where only the final moments of a match truly matter. For that reason, we are evaluating this carefully.

Please note that if any additional comeback systems are introduced, they are currently expected to be implemented in Season 9 or later.

Q:How will the "collect 7 Dragon Balls" rule create strategic variety? Based on what we've seen so far, the objective seems straightforward. What different approaches or tactics can teams use beyond simply collecting Dragon Balls faster than the opponent?

A:Since this overhaul is based on our goal of delivering battles that feel true to Dragon Ball, it is designed to naturally encourage more direct combat between heroes.

Within this framework, we believe that strategic decisions such as escaping while carrying a Dragon Ball, protecting teammates who are carrying Dragon Balls, or attempting to steal Dragon Balls that have been placed in the opposing team's territory will contribute to each team's overall strategy.

Q:What will happen to the sub-rules after the overhaul? Will the existing sub-rule modes continue to be supported, and if so, how will they be adapted to the new gameplay?

A:Sub Rules will no longer be available after the overhaul.

Q:Will there be additional game modes in the new version of SQUADRA, such as Team Deathmatch, Capture the Objective, or other alternative modes?

A:We are considering adding new game modes in the future.

However, we do not currently plan to introduce any modes based on the previous top-down-view GEKISHIN ruleset.

Q:After the overhaul, will there be any mechanics or systems involving summoning Shenron? It feels a bit strange to me that collecting Dragon Balls has no any connection to Shenron.

A:At this time, there are no plans for Shenron to appear during matches.

Q:Which features and mechanics from the current GEKISHIN ruleset will no longer be available after the overhaul?

A:Characters on the battlefield other than heroes, such as NPCs and bosses, will be removed, along with the experience and leveling system tied to defeating them. Gods of Destruction, their areas, GEKISHIN Burst, and Divine Draw will also be removed. Helpers will remain; however, their roles and functionality will be different after the overhaul. Additionally, the Divine Combo Card system will be replaced with a simpler system.

■About Systems & Controls

Q:Will the supported platforms or mobile device requirements change after the overhaul? If they remain the same, when can players expect details about the new UI and controls?

A:First, there will be no changes to the supported platforms following the overhaul. The game will continue to be available on Steam, PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.

We are also not currently planning any major changes to the device requirements or recommended specifications. In addition, we will continue working to improve performance and ensure the game can be played comfortably across all supported platforms.

As for the controls and UI, we plan to begin sharing details gradually starting in October, so please stay tuned for future updates.

Q:Will matchmaking be improved as part of the overhaul?

A:Our goal for matchmaking is to improve two key aspects: shorter wait times and fairer, more balanced matches.

At the same time, these objectives can sometimes conflict with one another, so finding the right balance is not always straightforward. We will continue working to improve matchmaking both as part of the overhaul and beyond its release.

Q:Will there be an option to switch camera perspectives in the new version of the game?

A:There will be no option to change the camera perspective. The game will only be playable from a third-person perspective.

Q:How will roles work in the new version of the game? Will there still be defined roles, and if so, how will they differ from the current system?

A:The current three-role system (Damage, Tank, and Technical) will be changed to a two-role system. These roles will be defined primarily by combat style, with one focusing on close-range combat and the other on long-range combat. Each team will consist of two heroes from each role.

In addition, the role-based ranking system will remain in place after the overhaul, allowing players to compete for higher ranks within each role.

Q:How will existing heroes be reworked for the overhaul? Also, how do you decide which heroes will be available at launch and which ones will be added later?

A:Existing heroes will not simply be adjusted based on their current versions. Instead, each hero will receive a new skill set designed around that character's unique traits.

As for the characters planned for Seasons 8 and 9, we are prioritizing heroes introduced from Season 1 onward that were, at one point, only obtainable through purchase.

Q:How will skills be designed after the overhaul? Since large attacks like the Kamehameha can block the player's view, what measures are being taken to maintain good visibility during combat?

A:As with the current ruleset, skills will primarily be focused on dealing damage to opponents. While some skills will include additional effects, such as causing knockback or stagger effects, we plan to remove the more specialized mechanics that were originally designed specifically for the previous top-down gameplay.

Regarding visual effects, we are making adjustments to suit the transition to a third-person perspective. While we want to preserve the scale and excitement that are characteristic of Dragon Ball battles, we are also carefully considering in-game visibility and plan to optimize both visual effects and their presentation to maintain a comfortable gameplay experience.

Q:Can you give us an overview of how movement and combat will work after the overhaul?

A:Movement will remain similar to the current GEKISHIN ruleset, with characters transitioning into high-speed movement after running for a certain period of time.

In addition, aside from certain special animations and cinematic sequences, combat will take place on a two-dimensional plane, meaning players will not be able to move freely in the vertical direction.

The overhaul will also introduce new motions as well, so we hope you'll look forward to seeing more as we continue to share details.

Q:Can you tell us more about how Super Attacks work after the overhaul?

A:All heroes will have a Super Attack that can be activated once its activation conditions have been met.

After activation, a targeting indicator will appear. If an enemy hero is caught within that area, the Super Attack will successfully connect and trigger a unique cinematic sequence. During this sequence, both the attacking hero and the target hero will temporarily leave the battlefield, and the players controlling those heroes will watch the corresponding animation.

Some characters will also have access to a MAX Super Attack, which features more elaborate animations and different damage values. In most cases, MAX Super Attacks will be obtainable through capsule just like emotes.

If no enemy hero is within the targeting area when the Super Attack is triggered, or if the target successfully escapes before it connects, the attack will fail. In that case, the cinematic sequence will not play, and the activation conditions must be met again before the Super Attack can be used.

■About Data Transfer, Owned Content & Compensation

Q:Will Hero Grades still be available after the overhaul, and will my current progress carry over? Or should I focus on earning Zeni and upgrading my Heroes before the update?

A:First, Hero Grades will be revised alongside the refinement of the Star Collection system. As a result, the current 7 Figure tiers will be consolidated into 3 tiers.

At the same time, we are exploring new ways to preserve the sense of progression and satisfaction that comes from improving each Hero's Grade, even though the system itself will take a different form.

We will share more details at a later date, but we can already confirm that your current Grade will never be reduced as a result of the overhaul. Existing Grades will either be preserved or consolidated into a higher tier.

In addition, players who have reached Grade 9 or Grade 10 before the overhaul will receive special rewards in recognition of that achievement.

Taking into account the role that Hero Grades will play after the overhaul, we will make every effort to ensure that any upgrades made before the overhaul will continue to provide value and will not become wasted after the update.

Q:How will emotes and character animations be displayed in the overhauled version of the game?

A:There will be no major changes to the conditions for triggering emotes and animations.

The only exception will be the "Emote: Dragon Ball Acquired".

*Please note that the MAX GEKISHIN Burst animation will be removed as part of the overhaul and the associated rule changes.

The trigger conditions after the overhaul are as follows:

------------------------

Emote: Start → Plays before the match begins

Finisher Attack Effects/Team Finisher Effects → Plays during the match when you KO an enemy hero with a rush attack

Emote: Victory → Plays after a victory; animations for each character on the winning team will play

Emote: MVP → Plays when you earn MVP in a match

Emote: Dragon Ball Acquired → At the end of the match, if you win, the animation for your controlled hero plays; if you lose, the animation for the enemy hero plays.

Q:Will skins and emotes remain available after the overhaul?

A:Heroes, skins, and emotes you have already acquired will carry over, and there will be no need to purchase them again.

Please note that some heroes will be unavailable during Season 8, and any skins or emotes associated with those characters will also be temporarily unavailable. However, they are currently planned to become available again in Season 9.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience while you wait for their return.

Q:How will the data transfer work and how do you do it?

A:No action is required on the player's side. Before the major overhaul, we plan to conduct a maintenance period during which the operations team will handle the data migration. We do recommend linking your Bandai Namco ID, however, as it will allow you to keep using the same save data when switching devices or playing on a different platform.

Q:How will Star Collection be handled after the overhaul?

A:Star Collection will be removed. However, a system that allows players to earn heroes through gameplay will remain in a different form.

Q:Will there be any compensation for heroes, skins, and emotes that become temporarily unavailable?

A:We do not plan to provide compensation for heroes that become temporarily unavailable, or for the skins and emotes associated with them.

We kindly ask for your patience until they become available again in the following season.

That said, we do plan to provide compensation for content that will be permanently removed, such as MAX GEKISHIN Burst, as well as compensation based on players' past gameplay activity and progression.

Q:Will previously released Helpers be obtainable again in the future?

A:Helpers that are already available in the game will generally remain obtainable, as they are today. However, certain characters, such as Mr. Satan and Bulla (GT), which were previously offered as ranked-season rewards, will no longer be obtainable.

That said, there will be no abilities that are exclusive to the unobtainable helpers, so players will not be at a disadvantage for not having them.

■Other Questions

Q:Will the Squadra Creators program continue after the overhaul? Additionally, will current creators be given an opportunity to decide whether they would like to continue participating in or withdraw from the program? Are there also plans to open applications for new creators to join the program?

A:While there are still many aspects under consideration and we are not yet in a position to share any confirmed information, the operation team hopes to continue growing the title together with the community.

We will provide further details regarding the future direction of the Squadra Creators program, including information on continued participation for current members, opportunities to opt out, and the potential reopening of applications for new creators, at a later date. We appreciate your patience in the meantime.

Q:Will there be new Heroes released during Seasons 8 and 9?

A:Yes, new Heroes will continue to be introduced in both Season 8 and Season 9, so please look forward to them.

Q:Will CPU Battle mode still be available after the overhaul, or will they be removed?

A:The timing is still being finalized, but we do plan to implement it in the future.

Q:Can you give us an overview of the gameplay experience outside of matches after the overhaul?

A:The overall gameplay cycle will remain largely the same, but the overhaul will introduce a new hero progression system. More information will be revealed gradually starting in October.
